Microsoft Invites Online Advertising Players to Test Its Ad Playing Field

The ad:tech New York conference was the perfect moment for Microsoft to send out invitations to online advertising industry players to come and test its playing field. The Redmond company is planning to debut the test-driving of a new federated system for online advertising built by AdECN, a wholly owned Microsoft subsidiary. The software giant revealed that the AdECN exchange model would bring a functionality which is not shared by any other online ad exchange system.

“Our goal is to provide a fair and level playing field for all the online advertising industry players to play on,” revealed Jeff Green, co-founder of AdECN. “The federated system simplifies online buying and selling. It will allow ad networks to use their own tools in which they have invested large amounts of time and money, to connect advertisers and publishers across the industry.”

Essentially, the new federated system developed as an extension of the AsECN platform is a replica of the New York Stock Exchange model. The Redmond company is working to deliver what is has defined as a “neutral auction house that automates the buying and selling of online display advertising”.

Via the new exchange model, Microsoft is delivering advanced flexibility in the hands of ad networks. In this regard, the company informed that players in its ad exchange model would be able to use their own proprietary technology, including optimization tools and solutions designed to perform behavioral and demographic targeting.

“Since being acquired by Microsoft, we now have the fuel we needed to build and test our new model,” Green added. “Pricing every ad impression in a neutral auction environment levels the playing field and will help us start to address the pricing issues we’ve seen in display marketing.”

Working on something sensitive or reading a personal e-mail and someone walks in? Or maybe you're just seeing what you'd look like as the opposite gender in photoshop. Well in under a second, it can be gone several different ways.

Step1
The simplest way of hiding everything is with the show desktop command. On any PC with a modern PC keyboard, there should be a "windows key" between the left control and alt buttons. It has a little windows flag on it and may also say "start." Hold that down and press D and tada, everything is minimized. Of course, what you have open is still shown in the task bar on the bottom of the screen so if you want full privacy, right click on it, uncheck "lock the taskbar," then drag the resizer bar at the top all the way down so the taskbar is basically gone. That or set the start menu to auto-hide and then just don’t mouse over it.

Step2
It's odd for someone to walk up and see no task bar and nothing open when you were obviously doing something on the computer a second ago. So to be even stealthier, hold the windows key from step 1 and instead press the L key. That will lock your computer. In XP Home it shows the login screen but it didn't actually log you out. Everything you had open is still running. In XP Pro it just brings up a little box saying that the computer was locked. For maximum security, make sure your windows account has a password on it so people would need that to unlock it. Then when someone walks in, do that quick keyboard combination and pretend like you just finished and were getting up to do something else.

Step3
My favorite method is to have a full screen program like a game running. Have whatever you really wanted to do open and then hold down alt and then hit tab until it brings you to the other program. Then you do whatever you really want to do and if someone walks up, just quickly hold alt and then press tab and quickly release both again. That will switch you back to your full screen program/game because that was the last program you were using and they won't be able to see what else is running.

Step4
Sometimes you just need to close one thing that you had open. In that case, pressing alt and F4 terminates whatever program is open and currently in the foreground. So if you're typing away in internet explorer and press alt-F4, internet explorer closes. Be aware that some programs don't close immediately. Word will ask you to save if you hit alt-F4 and IE7 will ask if you want to close all tabs for example. If your hands are on the mouse, forget about clicking file, exit or a bunch of red X’s. Just double click any folder or program's icon in the top left corner. That will close it.

Step5
If for some reason none of these other methods will work and you're on a PC, keep the tower on the ground and place it so the restart button is within kicking distance. That will look extremely obvious if you don't say that it's some weird power problem or you had to restart for an update though. It's also really bad and slightly dangerous for files on the hard drive to suddenly restart the computer.

Include Pictures In Your Visual Basic Application

If you are writing a visual basic application that you intend to sell, and you want to include image files within the program and have the image change based on a selection from something like a listbox or an option button, you’ll need to retrieve the files from another location. This article shows a convenient way to accomplish this.

If you want to display CAD files, or other images and pictures, within your visual basic application, there are a number of ways to accomplish this. If you are displaying a static picture (one that doesn't change),you can just load it into a picture box.

There are several ways to store and call graphics files to display based upon a user selection, using the "Image" feature. However, there are disadvantages to at least two of the most obvious methods.

You can include the graphics files in your .cab file, and have them load into the applications working directory. The problem with this is that if the files get lost, it causes a run-time error in your application, and your user will not be happy. Basically, this can cause your program to crash because your application calls for a file that is no longer there.

You can use the visual basic recommended method of storing and retrieving your files from a resource file. The problem with this is that the resource file feature will only accept bitmap image files. The bitmaps tend to be rather large in file size, but more importantly, the image quality is poor.

I have found that Windows meta files (*.wmf) work best when trying to display images created in a CAD system. These images, when loaded into an "Image" box, can be made to automatically "stretch", or scale, themselves to fit the box provided. This way, your images don't have to be all exactly the same size to look proportionate. In addition, the image resolution is much beter than a bitmap file.

Image provided by DZynSource, LLC Let's assume that you are writing an application, and you want to call various pictures to one "Image" box displayed on a form. Let's further assume that you want the image to change based on a user selection, like the form shown in the picture to the left. Once your image files are created, and saved in Windows Meta File format, they are ready to be imported into your application.

Create a form called something like "frmPicture". Add as many picture boxes as you desire to this form. Click on a picture box, go to the "properties" dialog box, and name the picturebox with a name that is something meaningful to you. If you are going to show pictures of a car, you could call this picture box "car", for example.

While in the properties dialog box, scroll down to the "picture" property. When you click on the picture name, in the properties column, a command button with three dots on it appears at the end of the picture property row. Click on it. This opens a direcory list box that allows you to search your computer to find your files. Select your desired car picture file. The picture will display in the picture box that you just created.

Now go to the form where you want to display these interchangeable pictures. Create an "Image" box, and size it to suit your application. Call this image box "Image1", or whatever makes sense to you. Go to the Properties dialog box and set the stretch property equal to true.

We use an Image box here because it has this property called "stretch" that allows our pictures to re-size to fit the box created.

If you are going to use an option button to select the image to be displayed, you can use code like the following to retrieve the picture:

You can change the code to suit whatever selction feature and file names you decide to use.

This tells the program that Image1's picture property is the car picture from the form called frmPicture.

In this case, every time the user selects a different option button, based on the textual description next to the button, the image changes to show a graphical representation of the choice. This is a visual aid to the user, and makes the software interface more user friendly.

Using this method accomplishes several things:

The images are internal to your application, that is, they are contained within the application.
You don't have to ship pictures and images as separate files that can get lost from the root directory, and ruin the performance of your software.
The Windows meta files give a reasonably good image quality, and scale to fit the image box supplied.

Improve Outlook 2003's Performance After Initial Setup

Sometimes MS Outlook will freeze or perform very slowly after setting it up for the first time. This can occur to accounts in an organization and home users alike. Follow the steps below to fix this potential issue.

The main solution is to turn off Cached Exchange Mode. To do so, launch MS Outlook and go to the Tools menu. Next, select "E-mail Accounts."

Select the option to "View or change existing e-mail accounts", click "next."

Next, click/select your Exchange Server e-mail account (ask your administrator), then click "Change."

Once chosen, under the Microsoft Exchange Server option, click to clear the "Use Cached Exchange Mode" check box. Click next, then Finish.

Quit the program and re-launch MS Outlook.

You can move the checked files to a custom folder if you adjust "Move checked files to ..." option selecting the destination folder. Duplicates folder structure will be maintained in the selected folder.

From this version the duplicates list supports multiple selection and you can select files using mouse and Ctrl/Shift keys. Note the difference between checked and selected files. You can then delete the selected files from the list and from the hard disk using the Delete key.

Establishing Automatic System Backups in Unix

Are you a system administrator that needs to do system backups? Database backups? Maybe this will help.

Being that I am a novice system administrator, I thought it would be a good idea to post about my task accomplishments in this blog. Here is the first of many. (This is a conceptual model only. This posts lacks specifics. This post is merely intended to reinforce the concepts I learned while performing this task. I hope it helps you too.)

For system administrators, it is important to back up the systems that is necessary for your company to operate. I will use system1 as the system that needs to be backed up, and system2 as the computer that system1 will be writing to. To back up data between to Unix FreeBSD systems do the following:

First you have to use: ssh-keygen -t dsa on system1 in order to generate the key pair used for authentication so that one system may write to a file on another system without human intervention. Once the key is made you have to save it in a file where it can be found when needed by the system. You can save them in /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa .

Next you have to make sure that same key is on system2 in the same /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa directory. You can do this by first changing your current directory to where you intend to save the key on system2: cd /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa .

Next you have to make sure that same key is on system2 in the same /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa directory. You can do this by first changing your current directory to where you intend to save the key on system2: cd /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa .

Then, you must put system2 into the known_hosts file on system1, and put system1 into the known_hosts file on system2

Now you need to check to make sure that everything you just did actually works. To do this you need to try to ssh from one system to another. You should not be asked for a password. If you are asked for a password, you did something wrong.

Now that you have set up access between system1 and system2, the next step is to set up the actual backup process. I will use file1 for the file on system1, and file2 for the location on system2 where file1 will be written to.

First you create a file that will contain the commands that system1 is to execute to perform the writing portion of the backup. I called this file backup.sh. You generally want backup.sh to be in /usr/local/bin because that directory is in everyone’s PATH, avoiding any permissions issues. I will use directory1 for the directory on system1 that file1 lies in. As you probably guessed, i will use directory2 for the name of the directory on system2 that file2 lies in. Here is what the contents of your backup.sh file should resemble:

#/bin/sh cd /usr/local/directory1 tar cvf /tmp/system1.file1 * scp file1 system2:/directory2/file2
exit

Finally you must place an entry into the crontab to schedule the frequency of the backup. Here is what your crontab should look like:

0 14 * * * /usr/local/bin/backup.sh >/directory2/file2 2>&1

And voila! your automatic backup between 2 FreeBSD systems should be complete!

Edit Music, Audio, and Sounds

This article deals with recorded audio, music, and sounds to be edited. This article assumes it is being done in a sound editing software program. This can be use to edit audio recordings such as poetry readings or your own audio book.

If it is not there already, burn or record your creation to the hard drive of the computer, preferably to "My Documents". Use either your editing software, sound recording software, or Windows Media Player to do this.

If the file is not opened already, use the music/sound editing software to open the file to be edited.

Edit the recording as necessary with the program. It is hard to get it the way desired at times, so plan on spending a lot of time on this step.
From here, mistakes can be edited out, background music or second instrument recordings can be added, sound effects can be added, the recording be changed sound wise such as warping the sound and such, the piece can be edited sound wise, sometimes extra notes can be added in music pieces, and so forth.
The editing program used will likely have instructions and ways within the program to do all this.

Burn the finished recording to a CD-R, CD-RW, or similar format for listening--or upload to online places for sale or fun. Make sure the sound format is compatible with the site uploaded to. Most sites take MP3s but a few may accept WMA. If the editing software doesn't convert to MP3--MP3 conversion programs may be obtained online for free at sites such as Downloads.com or Tucows. Also, there may be a website online that will do this without downloading.

Edit a Radio Interview That is on a CD (new)

This is an article on editing a radio interview that was conducted for the purpose of airing it. Whether editing it for a commercial for the interview or editing things like bloopers, swearing, background noise, etc. out, this article should be fine for it. I wrote a similar one a long time ago that kept showing up as an error on E-How, so I deleted it. It was an answer to a request then, but I figured maybe the requester or someone else can use it. This article is for the sole purpose of a person who has permission to do the editing. This article assumes the editing will be done directly on a computer.

Turn on the computer and load up the music editing program. Then insert the CD with the interview in the CD drive.

Copy the entire sound file with the help of the music editing program to the editing screen. If unable to do so within the program--Windows Media Player can be used to "rip" the file to the hard drive--just make sure the editing program can use WMA files, then use the editing program to open the file.

Follow the instructions for the particular music editing program being used to cut out bad parts, shorten segments, add background music, etc.
The methods used will be slightly different for different programs. Usually, it will be a familiar "cut and paste" process. This part can be difficult as the interview needs to be edited in the right places and for the right amount of time--try to save often and restore pieces at the time mistakes are made.

If a CD-RW type disk was used for the interview, the interview can be added or overwritten--just be sure to save a copy of the entire original interview somewhere. If the interview was made using a CD-R, then it must be "burnt" to a new CD.

Burn the edited interview to a CD-R or CD-RW type disc. This can be done with the music editing program or Windows Media Player. Making more than one copy is recommended for error control such as scratched CD's--also leaving a copy on the hard drive is recommended.

Use the edited interview on the air or the radio station's website or what ever way permission has been granted to do so.

Drawing and animating in Flip Boom is simple; the program is designed so that you can start working the moment you install and run it.

When you first open Flip Boom, you'll see a blank document and a variety of tools. You'll start off with two frames; make sure the first frame in the timeline at the bottom of the program screen is selected.

To draw, click on the paintbrush icon in the left-hand menu.

Select a color from the palette to the left of the drawing area. Unfortunately you can't customize colors in Flip Boom, but you at least have a basic range of shades.

Use the Brush Size slider at the top right to select a brush size. If you have a graphics tablet capable of pressure sensitivity and compatible drivers, you can select a larger brush size and just use the pen pressure to change the line weight.

Begin drawing on the white working area, as you might in any other program.

When you draw enclosed shapes, you can use the fill tool (the paint bucket in the left menu) to fill them in.

If you make a mistake, use the eraser to erase it.

When you're done with the first frame, click on the next; a new blank canvas will appear.

Use onion-skinning to view outlines of the previous frame, and draw the next based on that to create your sequential animation. When you draw something on the new frame, a third frame will appear in your timeline, ready for you to move on and continue drawing when you're done.

Alternately, instead of drawing the next blank frame you can instead draw the last frame in your animation before inserting a new blank frame between the first and last and using onion-skinning to draw in-betweens based on the first and last.

Match up the new RAM module with the slot – there is ONLY one way for the RAM module to be inserted correctly. Upgrade Your Computer's Memory

Every wants more speed out of their computer. The easiest way to do this is to upgrade your memory.

First thing you should when preforming any work on the inside of your computer is to shut down your computer down the start menu and unplug ALL the cords that are in the back of your computer.

Unscrew the screws that are on the back of your computer's case and set them to the side. Now you have to ground yourself, You can do this by an anti static cord or by touch the metal case.

Now that you have the case open and you have grounded yourself, locate the memory slots on your computer's motherboard. You should see white buttons on either side of the DIMM or RIMM slots. Carefully push these backwards, away from the memory sticks.

Grab the memory sticks on either side and gently rock it forward and backwards until the stick comes out smoothly. Once the sticks are out places them in or on an anti static bag.

Now that your old memory is out, take your new memory sticks and repeat Step 4 only instead of pulling the sticks, you will be pushing them in. Once in, the white tabs at the end of DIMM or RIMM slots will snap closed.

Note: Makes sure that your slots on the sticks match up with the slots on your motherboard, and DO NOT force the memory sticks in they will go in smoothly if they are lined up right.

Now that your new memory is in, put your case cover back on, screw the screws back in and are relatively tight and plug all you cords back into the back of your tower and your computer back on.

Note: Do not worry if your get a different screen upon start up, this is normal. Your BIOS needs to pick the upgraded memory and the BIOS will let you know if there is a problem.

Whether you are setting up a home theatre system, using your screen with a computer for business meetings or even in a stadium environment, there are certain things to take into account when purchasing a projection screen which can affect the efficiency of the product as well as the reliability of the product.

The screen surface affects the brightness and sharpness of the projected images. Lighting and intent of use are the most important factors. The screens gain has to do with how much light is emitted from the screen when projected upon. Gain is in direct opposition to the width of the viewing angle, so a high gain could hinder your ability to see the screen from the sides of a room.

The flatness of the screen can be more or less important based on your application, so when purchasing a screen a tensioning system may prove to be useful.

Black borders can be very helpful as they will provide a boundary around the edges of the projected image providing a cleaner, more professional look. Some also believe it tricks you into thinking that it a crisper picture as well.

Large screens often will have a seam down the center. Depending on your application and the distance that the audience will view the screen from, this could be more or less important. If this is a stadium scenario, the seam is less important, however if it is a small in home theatre, it may be distracting.

Since we are mostly going to be playing mostly online games, a video card would be best suitable for our needs because one, the memory made available to video rendering is great. Gigabyte video cards are essential for online gaming which is at least a gigabyte of video that is made available to our already capable computer that we have. Most computers today can run any late model video card without really any upgrades. However, the more R.A.M (Random Access Memory) we have in our computer, the better. Though anything of or better than 512 Megabyte's of R.A.M. especially of D.D.R. 1 through 5( Double Data Rate) is more than sufficient.

Now that we have figured out the type of video card we will be using, we need to know where to purchase this piece of hardware to give our graphics area a better view. Normally we can get them at a local Wally World or if your wanting to get really into it, you can go to any computer outlet and buy a high end video card made especially for online or offline game play. This way you get what you pay for and you know what your getting especially if it came from a computer outlet. While at the computer outlet, if your not a handy person on knowing where to put your new video card, ask them to install it for you and should not take any time at all, and they might even do it for free.

Now we can take our new computer with our newly installed video card and test it out with the games that we have wanted to play. This way we will know whether it works the way we wanted it to. Also the video card will give some extra added stability to our system and possibly make it run tremendously better.

When you and a work colleague have a disagreement on an issue, take the high road and compromise to find an answer to the problem. By taking the high-road on an issue, you can be a team player at work. You can also impress your bosses when there is a problem between you and a coworker and you sacrifice yourself to find a solution to a problem.

At times we find ourselves giving 120% on a job, and think we can't give anymore of ourselves to the cause. Then a coworker calls off work. This really sets you back with your deadlines. So when you boss comes up to you and asks you to work overtime to cover for that person, you stop yourself and think for a moment "this isn't my responsibility, I'm mentally and physically tired and I don't need the overtime money". Take the extra moment when you are thinking about all this and fight the mental and physically tiredness. Say yes. This will get the job done, help out your boss, put some extra money in your pocket (perhaps you can use that for a massage after work to help those tired muscles) and remind your boss just how much of a team player at work you are.

You have built up 20 years of time at your workplace. You have attained 4 weeks of vacation. So for the past 10 years, you have taken Christmas week off to spend more time with your family. Your workplace has hired some new people in the last year, and they will only get a few days off for vacation time. Instead of taking off your regular Christmas week, sacrifice your week off and let some of the people with less time use their time during Christmas. This will show you as a team player at work, because seniority would work in your favor and would give you the right to take that time at Christmas. You will also lead by example - years to come, when your coworkers are older with more seniority, they may think back to your kindness and do the same for those younger than them at your workplace.

It's your birthday and you'd much rather have off from work than to have to drag yourself into work. But you've used up all your personal and vacation time for the year. Make this day one to enjoy, not to dread, by baking cookies or cupcakes the night before your birthday and take them into work so everyone can enjoy your birthday. Be willing to work the hours people call in. Log in at various times and decide which is the busiest.

Take care of your taxes. Most places hire you as an independant contractor and do not take taxes out of your money so be sure you do.

Being a pharmaceutical sales representative is a highly coveted job that can be extremely fun and lucrative. The position involves interaction with every aspect of medical staff, including highly trained doctors in their field, extensive product knowledge training, travel, sales, and freedom. The field can be hard to break into but, with a little luck and a lot of skill, you can turn yourself into a top-notch pharmaceutical sales rep.

Networking is key to finding a position in pharmaceutical sales. Most positions are filled by referrals from other reps. Ask around and see if anyone knows any other drug reps. Ask your doctor's office for reps' cards and contact them.

Be prepared and have your resume ready. When you do make contact with another rep, make sure to have your resume up-to-date and written to emphasize your sales and marketing skills. The rep will hopefully pass your resume on to his/her manager.

Market. In the past, prior medical experience/knowledge was essential to selling pharmaceuticals, now the emphasis is more on marketing. When you score an interview with a pharmaceutical sales manager, dress professionally and wow them with your abilities. You will most likely be asked to "sell" the manager something, such as a pen. Describe the object's features (black ink, click on/off) and the benefits of the object (black ink shows up clearly, keeps pocket cleaner).

Train. Once you land a pharmaceutical sales job, you will be sent to training at corporate headquarters. You will be given the medical materials to learn. Study them well because you will be expected to have learned everything prior to training.

Behave. When you arrive at training, make sure you display professional behavior at all times. It can be tempting to go party with other reps and "let loose" from the pressure of sales training, but your manager will be informed of your behavior and you do not want to embarrass your manager. Reps have gotten fired from training based on their behavior.

Study hard and do your best. If you need help, ask the instructors. They are experienced former reps who know the business well. Your test scores will follow you throughout your career on performance evaluations, so work hard.

Set up your storage unit of samples and promotional materials and keep it well organized once you have finished training. Pharma companies constantly revise marketing materials and you want to be sure you're giving doctors the latest information.

Organize your time. Pharma sales is very flexible with a lot of freedom. Don't be tempted to cut corners to shorten your day. Get the job done.

Plan your work and work your plan. Make detailed lists of the doctors you need to see; their prescribing information; locations and sample cards. Load your car with fresh supplies every day. Planning your work in advance will allow you to complete the day much more easily (and earlier).

Communicate with your colleagues. Most pharma reps work in teams and call on many of the same doctors. Coordinate your efforts with other reps and share notes on the offices so that each rep can achieve maximum exposure to medical staff.

Think outside the box. Doctors see a zillion drug reps, so find a creative approach to getting the doctor's attention. Make sure your efforts are in total compliance with the selling guidelines established by the FDA and your pharma company.

Stay on marketing message. Companies spend a lot of time and money developing marketing materials and ensuring that everything is legal. Reps can get fired for changing the marketing message and the company can be fined large amounts of money.

Provide food. Many drug reps get time with doctors by bringing lunch to their office. Lazy reps bring pizza. Skip the pizza and do something out of the ordinary. Get something that they don't often have and will like. When booking a lunch with a medical office, find out if there are vegetarians or those with food allergies.

Take care of your receipts. Pharma reps often have big expense accounts, but that means a ton of paperwork at the end of each month to submit your expense report. Keeping track of receipts will help you avoid the last minute track-down of lost receipts and avoid getting stuck for the expense out-of-pocket if you can't provide a receipt for.

What is special about you and your skill set? How can you make yourself sparkle in a big crowd of other equally qualified people? Find and define your own employment niche. Look at all your skills and abilities. Identify the particular skill set that meets your dream job’s requirements. Then, see if you are lacking in some area. For example, if you an AS degree instead of a BS, start working toward the higher degree. Impress the company representative by dressing your best, demonstrating your impeccable interpersonal skills and presenting them with your flawless resume. Be willing to push or challenge them. You may be surprised to discover that something you said motivated them to go beyond the norm and produce a better, faster or more efficient result.

Save Yourself Before Your Computer Crashes

Download ‘FastStone Photo Resizer 2.5’ from www.download.com or any Software Web Site. It is a Freeware. Open it by double clicking its Shortcut. Read ‘Help’.

After it opens, click ‘Batch Rename’. A list of the folders etc will appear in the left panel. Select the folder in which your photos are stored. Double click it. The list of photos will appear in the left panel.

Select the photos, you want to rename. Click ‘Add’ button. A list of the selected photos will appear in the right panel.

Batch Rename Read ‘Tips’ given below the right panel. Write the name and the symbols in the ‘Rename As’ box.

Click ‘Rename’ button and confirm the action. The selected photos will be renamed and saved in the same folder. (Previous names will be replaced by new names).

Always make backups of your files and folders and store them in a separate place than your computer.

Make sure you have a good firewall. This will prevent worms, Trojan viruses and spy ware from infecting your system. Some applications require that you disable your firewall, so use good judgement.

Review your browser and email setting for security. Make sure to constantly erase your "cookies" folder. Cookies pose almost no threat for damaging computers however; they do track your daily actions online. Set your "internet zone" for high and your "trusted sites" for medium low security.

Watch out for Active-X and JavaScript files as hackers can plant viruses and other harmful elements in your programs.

Norton is the way to go! Install some kind of anti virus software and make sure to set it for automatic updates. New viruses are found everyday, so make sure you update regularly.

Don't open attachments! Don't open unknown email attachments, many of these contain viruses and allow hackers to get into your system.

Only run and download programs from places you trust. Never send these files to friends and co-workers due to the high virus risks.

Turn off your computer and disconnect from the internet. Hackers can't get into your system if your computer is off.

Choose an Excellent Computer or Laptop

It is not too hard to choose a computer or laptop when you know what you are going to use the computer for. That is the key, knowing yourself, and knowing the use you intend to give the laptop. There are some things that you need in a laptop or computer --that are considered necessities rather than luxuries.

If you shop around at a store, the salesperson there will point you to the computers that he or she wants to sell. So, you are not getting an unbiased opinion of which computer to purchase.

In this article, I give some helpful hints and suggestions to those who are going to choose computers today, this month or next month.

First decide how you will use your computer. Most people use it this way--either for everything or for practically nothing. You decide how much you use your computer.

If you use it for practically nothing, that means you might check email, send email and maybe do a little of the net surfing (shopping, browsing, and checking out the news or weather online). If this is your computer profile, then you need basics and can get by with almost any brand new computer there is on the market today.

However, if you want to do a little more with your computer. You want to browse, surf, send email. You want to send pictures or scan pictures into your computer from a scanner. Or perhaps you want to put pictures onto your desktop (on your computer) through a cellular phone or through an external camera. Then you need a little bit more than basics. Sometimes you might want to transfer pictures to a disk ( a cd), and or other times you might want to download music to a disk or to your computer. The more and more that you intend to use your computer, the more features you need.

If you want to use your computer for all those activities and tasks and more, and if you want to compose documents with your computer and use other graphic or word-processing programs, then you will need these at the very least:

1. Laptop (preferable but a desktop is acceptable)
2. USB ports (preferably three or four of these, though one might be acceptable--depending on use).
3. CD and DVD-Writer (Now, you can transfer files, music, pictures plus videos right onto a disk. You can take almost everything off your hard-drive and keep it safe on disk. I recommend doing duplicates, just in case. You will always have your important files and pictures that way).
4. You might want an extra or a long-lasting battery for your laptop. If you intend to travel with it, or even use it on the road locally , a lot, then you would want to purchase that long-lasting battery, or that extra battery. Sometimes these can range about two or three hundred dollars depending on the laptop.
(Some batteries last two hours while there are rare few that promise to last five hours. Obviously, if yours lasts five hours, you might not need two batteries).
5. If you live in an area that is stricken with tornados, earthquakes and blackouts on a regular basis, an extra investment in that extra battery might be quite helpful to you--especially if you work from your home computer.

6. Security programs: Most modern, brand-new computers have some security programs built right in. For example, most have "McAffee" or "Norton" with a free three-month trial basis. Personally, I do not like either of these two programs. You can try out an awesome program online--for free, called, "Zone Alarm". This is a very cool security program which actually captures offending ISPs and also keeps logs of everything. There is just something about Zone Alarm. I believe it is quite a helpful program.

Recommendations are helpful. And, in keeping with that statement of fact, I recommend ACER. Acer is a very cool computer company. I have used their computers for a number of years. I am very satisfied with the company.

I found an advertisement once in a magazine and thought, "I have never heard of that company". But, I decided to take a chance and try it (since it was on sale, anyway). I am so happy that I took the chance and tried Acer.

Probably, other than Apple, I would not choose another company for computers other than Acer.

Compaq is a great computer company also. A number of years ago, I used their customer service and I was completely satisfied with their company.

How to Create and Organize Desktop Icons in Windows XP

Desktop icons are a great way to provide quick access to various programs, folders, and documents that you use on a daily basis. However, if you have a large number of icons on your desktop, it may seem very cluttered. The article below provides tips and tricks for organizing your desktop.

CREATING A PROGRAM SHORTCUT
To create a shortcut on your desktop to a program, browse to the program via the "Start" menu. Once you have located the program, right-click on it. On the expanded menu, go to "Send To" and left-click on "Desktop (create shortcut)". When you look at your desktop, you should find an icon to the program.

CREATING A FOLDER OR DOCUMENT SHORTCUT
To create a shortcut on your desktop to a folder or document, right-click on the "Start" button and left-click on "Explore". The Windows Explorer screen will display. Browse to the folder or document.

When you have located the file or folder, right-click on it. On the expanded menu, go to "Send To" and left-click on "Desktop (create shortcut)". When you look at your desktop, you should find an icon to the folder/document.

ORGANIZING YOUR DESKTOP
Right-click anywhere on your desktop and go to "Arrange Icons By". In the expanded menu, make sure that there is a check mark next to "Align to Grid" and that there is no check mark next to "Auto Arrange".

NOTE: If all of your icons suddenly disappear, make sure that you did not accidentally click on "Show Desktop Icons". This option requires that there is a check mark next to it in order for your shortcuts to display on the screen.

Click and drag your icons to where ever you want them on your desktop. You can create groups of icons, depending on how you would like to set them up. This part is totally up to you ... the idea is to organize the desktop however is best for your needs. The attached screenshot is an example of how you can organize them.

How to Clean Your Hard Drive

Running low on hard drive disk space? Chances are, there are plenty of unnecessary files on your computer that you don't need and/or can be wiped clean from your hard drive. Keep reading for steps on freeing up that precious memory!

First, run Disk Cleanup on your PC. Do this by opening your system tools folder (select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools). To free up the maximum amount of space, check all of the boxes in Disk Cleanup.

Next, uninstall any unused Windows Components on your PC (select Start > Control Panel. Open Add or Remove Programs . Click the Add/Remove Windows Components button. Select the components you want to remove and click OK). Uninstalling Microsoft games alone will free up over 12MB of memory. Do you use "fax services"? If not, check it off and get rid of it. If you use Internet Explorer, but not MSN Explorer, get rid of it. This will free up almost 14MB of memory. Check off any unused components and watch the memory get replenished to your hard drive.

Finally, get rid of old programs you do not use on your PC. Open your control panel(select Start > Control Panel), Open Add or Remove Programs. Check the dates of when the last time each program was used. Chances are, if it has been over a year since you've used the program, you can trash it. Check all of the programs you wish to remove.

How to Clean Your CD-Rom Drive

Check and make sure all your disks are scratch free. This may have something to do with your drive not working correctly. Make sure you also load your disk properly.

Always use laser lens cleaner to clean your cd-rom drive. Don't try just using soap and water, this will ruin your drive completely.

Run laser cleaner Place the lens cleaner in the cd-rom drive and let it work for about 2 or 3 minutes before taking it out.

Change Your Default Program to Open Files

Many times when we install programs, the install process will scan your computer for file types and then ask you if you would like these files to be open with the program being installed. Once the program is installed certain file types will be open with that program. For instance, if you install iTunes, the install will ask you if you want to open these music file types with iTunes. The file extensions can be mp3, wma, wav, etc. This short tutorial will show you how to change the file association with a particular program. In other words when you double click on a picture file you can designate which program opens the file.

Select: Start, Control Panel, Tools, Folder Options.

In the folder option box select, File Types tab.

Let’s use picture files as an example. Scroll down and locate jpeg which is one of the most common picture files used. All the file extensions are in alphabetical order so it makes it easy to quickly locate a file extension.

Below the file extension window you will see “Opens with:” to change the program to open picture files, select the “Change” button. Select the new program that you want to use to open your jpeg picture files with.

If your program is not found in the “Open with:” box then select, “Browse” button and then locate your program within the Program directory.

Apply the exact same procedure for any other file types you wish to change your program association with. You can apply this method to movie files, sound files, pdf files, html files, etc. You can Google “File Types” to get a complete list of Microsoft file types and what they are used for.

Change the Size of Your Screen Image

CHANGING THE PIXEL SIZE: To change the pixel size simply display your desktop. The desktop is the main screen, where icons are located. Right click out in an open area, away from the icons. A menu will appear, click on properties. In the properties box, click on the "settings" tab. At the bottom of the "settings" display you will see a box with a slider that says screen resolution. Move this bar back and forth to make the screen image smaller and larger.

LARGER SCREEN IMAGE: To make the screen image large slide the bar down, toward the less end.

SMALLER SCREEN IMAGE: To make the screen image smaller slide the bar up, toward the more end.

Know the UNIX operating system. You cannot hack UNIX without knowing how the operating system works and how it operates. Once you have mastered the usage of UNIX, you can begin learning some hacking techniques. Know the UNIX commands and the error messages and what each error message conveys.

Guess the login name and password. At times, doing this will yield access, especially if everyone in the office already has a standard login naming convention. Also, some users are careless; they leave their passwords on sticky notes, or they let other people see what they are typing. Teach them a lesson by hacking into their system and then tell them they should be more careful next time. Help them choose a stronger password that is hard to guess.

Log in to superuser accounts. Superuser names that are shortcut names commonly used to support the subsystems are "root" (has no restrictions), "sysadmin" (does not need a root account), "mountfsys" (mount files) and "makefsys" (make files). Some careless systems administrator might leave the password as "password" or they might use a password that is the same as the login name. For example, for login "root," they use the password "root." Other common ones are "bin" and "daemon." Teach other systems admins in your company to be more careful by doing this simple hack so they can strengthen the sysadmin accounts right away.

Use lowercase when guessing logins and passwords. Guess from 1 to 8 alpha and numerics. Sometimes, a weak password will have only alpha characters, so go there first.

Try basic commands once you are in. You know you are in if you see any of the following characters at the beginning of the line: $, % or #. Some basic commands to use are "ls- a" (list of files in current directory), "cd\name" (name of the subdirectory you choose), "cd\" (brings your home directory to current use) and "cat name" (a filename that the user name you got into has written). To find or look at the list of accounts created in the system, use "cat /etc/passwd." By default this is readable by anyone in the system.

Locate the "shadow" files. If the /etc text file doesn't show the password hashes, you can find them using "NIS/yp," which is a password shadowing the password data. Some UNIX systems use this to hide passwords.

Use a brute-force password-cracking technique. This is a repeated attempt to guess the password. This is useful to find a forgotten password, but it needs the aid of a systems administrator to allow this to be done repeatedly by clearing the lockouts when they happen.

Use a dictionary word-cracking technique. This is one of the most popular techniques to hack into UNIX passwords. This takes a word list and then tries to crack one or all the listed passwords listed in the file. Dictionary word-cracking tools filter, change or mutate the words, add prefixes or suffixes and mix letters and numbers by switching the orders they are used.

Use the Alex Muffet's program to crack passwords on UNIX. This can be configured by the systems administrator to run automatically and periodically, which then sends a "nastygram" or mail to users with weak passwords to remind them to create stronger passwords. This can be run manually and used across multiple systems.

Use Jack the Ripper cracking tool. This program is DOS-based and uses a number of features that are easy to use. There is also a version called John the Ripper, which was developed by Solar Designer; cracklike rules have been added and can run on DOS and UNIX. Either one will do to hack into any DOS- or UNIX-based system.

Create a system restore point. Name it "Before Cleaning with CCleaner"

Create a system restore point. To do this, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and select "Create Restore Point".

Open it (It will place an icon on your desktop). On the left side you will see 4 Buttons. 1. Cleaner, 2. Registry, 3. Tools and 4. Options. We will be using Cleaner and Registry. When you are in Cleaner Mode, You will see 2 Tabs not far to the right (Registry mode does not have these tabs). These 2 Tabs are "Windows" (Cleanup) and "Applications" (Cleanup). While in the "Windows" tab, Click "Run Cleaner" in the bottom Right hand corner.

Click the "Applications" Tab. Click Run CCleaner.

Next, go down to the Registry Button on the Left hand side. It is just under the cleaner button. Click "Scan For Issues". This is going to find problems with your registry, an extremely important part of your computer. It is very accurate and has never told me that something was an issue when it really wasn't. It may take a while to scan, and when it is finished, Click "Fix Selected Issues".

A pop-up will come up and ask "Do you want to backup changes to the registry?". This is GOOD. Click "Yes". Then save the backup wherever you want to.

One last screen. You are almost done, and your computer is almost done. I'm sure you can already feel the difference, but after this, you will be very happy with the results! Click "Fix All Selected Issues"! Thats It! That wasn't that hard either!

First, run Disk Cleanup on your PC. Do this by opening your system tools folder (select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools). To free up the maximum amount of space, check all of the boxes in Disk Cleanup.

Next, uninstall any unused Windows Components on your PC (select Start > Control Panel. Open Add or Remove Programs . Click the Add/Remove Windows Components button. Select the components you want to remove and click OK). Uninstalling Microsoft games alone will free up over 12MB of memory. Do you use "fax services"? If not, check it off and get rid of it. If you use Internet Explorer, but not MSN Explorer, get rid of it. This will free up almost 14MB of memory. Check off any unused components and watch the memory get replenished to your hard drive.

Finally, get rid of old programs you do not use on your PC. Open your control panel(select Start > Control Panel), Open Add or Remove Programs. It is helpful to set the computer to standby automatically, without user intervention, to save power when you are away from your computer.

Decide how long you want a computer to sit idle before it goes into standby mode. This will vary depending on how often you use it and what times of day you work. Keep in mind weekend use when you make your decision.

The Control Panel choice is circled. Columns are similar in Windows Vista. Click on the "Start" menu in the bottom left corner of your computer screen. From there, open the Control Panel, which is in the right-hand column.

The Power Options icon is highlighted. Choose the "Power Options" choice in the Control Panel. The choices appear in alphabetical order, so this option is towards the bottom of the screen (see photo at left).

The System Standby choice is circled. Click the "System Standby" drop-down box choice towards the bottom of the screen. You will want to change that from "never" (see photo at left).

Choose the amount of time you wish for the computer to wait before it goes into standby mode automatically. This can be 1 to 10 minutes, and then increased by increments of 5 minutes. You can choose up to 5 hours.

Click the "Apply" button all the way to the right inside of the Power Options dialog box. Your computer is now ready to stand by automatically according to the time limits you set.

Repeat these steps if your computer use should ever change. This can also be helpful for keeping prying eyes away from your computer screen. This can work for business use, confidential data or children. You can set it to stand by after a few minutes and then require a password to log in to the computer again.

There’s two ways to permanently delete data. To permanently erase an entire hard drive including the operating system, you need to get a program that can be burned to a CD so you boot from that and erase the hard drive using the instructions on the CD. There are paid programs for this but for free, you can download Darik’s Boot and Nuke aka DBAN.

Just download it and follow the simple directions to burn a special CD. Then leave the disc in your CD drive and restart your computer. Immediately after it turns on press whatever key it says to load up a boot menu. Usually it’s F12 on modern computers. On an older computer it may be F8. On really, really old computers it can be ESC.

When the boot menu comes up, choose the CD drive and a small mini-operating system will load up and give you options on how to wipe your drive. With most it’s really straightforward. With Darik’s just press F3 to view the types of wiping or just type dod and hit enter. The reason this type of bootable CD, full hard drive wiping works far better than formatting is a little complicated. Basically formatting is like erasing a book’s table of contents but none of the actual text so it looks empty but really isn’t. It leaves the data sitting on the hard drive and says it’s available space to be overwritten. It’s still there until new data actually overwrites it. Bootable hard drive wipers change every single bit on the hard drive to 0 so the data is completely gone.

Of course, the previous method makes the computer totally unusable if you wipe the main system hard drive. This makes it hard to resell because it now has no operating system. Reinstalling Windows is a pain too so it’s only a really common method for businesses that rent computers. Rental companies have other, faster methods of making them useable again. If you want to just permanently delete a couple files and still leave your computer useable, keep reading.

Selective file deletion programs are traditionally called file shredders. A file shredder alternates between overwriting the files you select with all 0’s and all 1’s to make the file even harder to recover. A nice free shredder comes as a separate application with the installer for Spybot Search and Destroy. It’s called the Secure Shredder. You just drag and drop files you want shredded and hit go. It seems to get exponentially slower with large numbers of files though and doesn’t have any progress bar so you never know when it’s going to be done.

That’s a free way to get rid of a couple files quickly but if you regularly need stuff shredded, you’ll probably want to buy a better program for it. Search the web, there’s dozens of good ones out there. All programs work the same way though so either way, your files will be completely unrecoverable.

First thing to do is ask yourself "Is this offer too good to be true?" well then it most likely is and you should ignore or report the message/offer/letter right away because it is probably a scam.

To help you identify whether you might be the target of a scam, examine the following list:

*Were you promised a large amount of money in return for sending a wire transfer?

*Are you required to wire funds to be deposited by someone you don't know?

*Are you being instructed to wire money in order to claim lottery or prize winnings?

*Are you being asked to wire money in response to a guaranteed credit card or loan offer?

*Are you being instructed to send money to claim an inheritance?

*Are you wiring money in response to an internet or phone offer?

*Are you required to send money to someone you don't know?

*Are you supposed to send money to participate in a foreign lottery?

How to Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams

1. Be suspicious of any e-mail or other message containing an urgent request for your personal information.

Phishing scams typically include upsetting or exciting (but false) statements to encourage victims to act immediately. They typically ask for information like AOL screen names or other usernames and passwords, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers and more. Remember, AOL employees will never ask you for your password in an e-mail or instant message.

2. Even if you think a request for information may be legitimate, don't click the links in the e-mail to visit a Web site.

Sometimes links can be disguised to look like they're taking you to a real site, when they're actually taking you to a scam site. Instead of clicking a link, type the Web site's address by hand to ensure that you go to the company or organization's real site.

If the request for information is coming from a company or organization with whom you have a relationship, call them directly to confirm whether they actually need the information and, if so, whether you can provide it over the telephone.

3. Be extremely careful if you share personal or financial information online.

AOL recommends that you never provide sensitive information via e-mail or instant message. Providing this information via Web site is acceptable only if you are certain that the site is legitimate, and the site is secured (see below for additional info).

4. If you submit information to a Web site, make sure the site is secure.

Look for the "lock" icon on the status bar at the bottom of your browser window. The lock icon typically appears in the lower right-hand corner of the browser window. In addition, check the beginning of the URL or Web address - if it starts with "https://," rather than just "http://," you're on a secure server.

5. Review credit card and other account statements regularly.

If you see anything suspicious, contact your banks and all your credit card issuers immediately. If your statement is late by more than two or three days, call your credit card company or bank to confirm your billing address and account balances.

6. Keep your operating system and Web browser up to date.

To update your Windows® operating system and your Internet Explorer® browser, go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Follow the instructions there to check for updates, then download and install any critical updates.

7. Install and run anti-virus software and update it frequently.

10 Fast and Free Security Enhancements

Before you spend a dime on security, there are many precautions you can take that will protect you against the most common threats.

1. Check Windows Update and Office Update regularly (http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates) ; have your Office CD ready. Windows Me, 2000, and XP users can configure automatic updates. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options.

2. Install a personal firewall. Both SyGate (_www.sygate.com) and ZoneAlarm (_www.zonelabs.com) offer free versions.

3. Install a free spyware blocker. Our Editors' Choice ("Spyware," April 22) was SpyBot Search & Destroy (_http://security.kolla.de). SpyBot is also paranoid and ruthless in hunting out tracking cookies.

4. Block pop-up spam messages in Windows NT, 2000, or XP by disabling the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant messaging program). Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them.

5. Use strong passwords and change them periodically. Passwords should have at least seven characters; use letters and numbers and have at least one symbol. A decent example would be f8izKro@l. This will make it much harder for anyone to gain access to your accounts.

6. If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express, use the current version or one with the Outlook Security Update installed. The update and current versions patch numerous vulnerabilities.

7. Buy antivirus software and keep it up to date. If you're not willing to pay, try Grisoft AVG Free Edition (Grisoft Inc., w*w.grisoft.com). And doublecheck your AV with the free, online-only scanners available at w*w.pandasoftware.com/activescan and _http://housecall.trendmicro.com.

8. If you have a wireless network, turn on the security features: Use MAC filtering, turn off SSID broadcast, and even use WEP with the biggest key you can get. For more, check out our wireless section or see the expanded coverage in Your Unwired World in our next issue.

9. Join a respectable e-mail security list, such as the one found at our own Security Supersite at _http://security.ziffdavis.com, so that you learn about emerging threats quickly and can take proper precautions.

10. Be skeptical of things on the Internet. Don't assume that e-mail "From:" a particular person is actually from that person until you have further reason to believe it's that person. Don't assume that an attachment is what it says it is. Don't give out your password to anyone, even if that person claims to be from "support."

Four tips to using System Restore on Windows XP

System Restore is a feature of Windows XP that periodically backs up the Windows system folders. It does this in case some piece of software is not doing something today that it was doing yesterday. In that event, you can restore the latest System Restore backup and hopefully fix things.

Microsoft refers to System Restore backups as "restore points". They reside on the C disk in a folder Windows tries to keep hidden.

System Restore runs silently in the background, thus, you can use a Windows XP machine for years and not be aware of its existence - which is both good and bad.

Tip One

The bad part leads to the first tip - every now and then make a restore point manually, just to be sure you can (instructions for doing so are below). There are three reasons for this.

First, under some conditions, System Restore will purposely turn itself off and not tell you that it's no longer running. Therefore, just before you manually make a restore point, check that System Restore has made some recent restore points. You do this by starting the restore procedure, then browsing the calendar of previous restore points without actually restoring anything. I would feel reasonably safe with one restore point a week.

Second, the rules for when System Restore makes a restore point are numerous and confusing. Thus it can be functioning within normal parameters but still go weeks without making a restore point.

Finally, I've seen System Restore break (as opposed to turning itself off by design). That is, when I tried to manually make a restore point it failed. It's better to know that this has happened than not know.

There is no one right answer for how often to manually make a restore point. I'd suggest monthly as a starting point, more often if the computer is very important, less often if not. The process of making a restore point takes about 10 seconds.

Tip Two

Always make a restore point before installing new software. Some software makes restore points as part of the installation process, but not all. Better safe than sorry. In addition to new software, also make a restore point before installing a new version of existing software and prior to installing bug fixes (a.k.a. patches, updates). And, leading to the next tip, make a restore point before letting antivirus or antispyware software remove something malicious.

Tip Three

Once upon a time I was working on a Windows XP machine that was infected with lots of malicious software (viruses, trojans, adware, spyware, etc.). When I got the machine, infected though it was, Windows was able to boot. At some point though, the cleanup process got too aggressive.

Something I did in removing the malware prevented Windows from fully booting. It got to the point of displaying the desktop wallpaper, but that was about it. The desktop icons never appeared and none of the auto-started applications ran. Even in safe mode, Windows got to the same halfway point in the boot process and stopped. I had followed my own advice and made a recent restore point, but how to restore to it?

The third tip is that System Restore can be used even in this case. Start the machine and use the F8 key to invoke the "Windows Advanced Options menu" just as if you were going into safe mode. Then chose the option to boot to "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". This disables more of Windows than regular Safe Mode does. In my case, it disabled the broken part of Windows and the machine was able to boot to a command prompt.

From the command prompt, you can run System Restore with this command:

c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

This invokes the normal System Restore application (not a text mode version), except there is no option to make a restore point. All you can do in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt is restore previously taken restore points. Pick the most recent restore point and hopefully your problem will disappear. In my case it did, Windows was able to boot after restoring the latest restore point. If not, try an earlier restore point.

Tip Four

The last tip is simply to try booting to "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" now, while everything is working correctly. Consider it a dress rehearsal.
Invoking

With Windows XP running, System Restore is invoked from the Start button with:

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore

You can make System Restore easier to find by creating a shortcut to it on the desktop. When hovering over System Restore in the last step above, right click instead of left clicking and then "Send To" -> "Desktop (create shortcut)". Another way is to navigate to this folder:

c:\windows\system32\restore\

and right click on file rstrui.exe. Here too, send it to the desktop.

Note: The directory where file rstrui.exe lives is, technically speaking, the system root folder. Normally the system root is "c:\windows", but this is not mandatory. To be 100% sure, do Start -> Run and in the box enter "%SystemRoot%" this will open Windows Explorer at the system root folder.

Sometimes when invoking "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" Windows asks you to log in, sometimes not. If prompted, log in as as a user that is a member of the Administrators group. The Windows userid you normally use may work fine. If not, try logging in as user Administrator with a blank password.
